Our Model: Five Pillars of the Work

Built for Impact. Designed for Dignity.

At New Mexico Vets for Pets, we operate on a simple principle: when care systems are built around trust and hands-on engagement, everyone benefits.

Our work is guided by five interconnected pillars. These are not just program areas—they are commitments that shape every decision we make, from grooming shelter dogs to training the next generation of veteran animal care specialists.

🟦 1. Vocational Training & Employment

We believe that purpose is a form of healing.
That’s why we train veterans in skills that lead directly to employment: animal grooming, mobile field support, outreach logistics, and eventually, full-scale veterinary care. Every grooming session is both a service and a lesson. Our goal is to launch veterans into jobs they’re proud of—and build a workforce rooted in care, structure, and service.

🟦 2. Mental Health & Therapeutic Bonding

Working with animals is inherently therapeutic.
It offers a nonjudgmental space for veterans to re-engage with daily structure, emotional regulation, and positive connection. Whether it’s brushing a dog, delivering supplies in the field, or building a rapport with shelter animals, we’ve seen the deep emotional benefits of this work in real time. It’s healing by doing—and it works.

🟦 3. Community Engagement in the Field

Through our partnerships with Albuquerque Community Safety (ACS) and Roadrunner Food Bank, we deploy food, water, supplies, and basic triage services to animals in encampments and underserved neighborhoods. These missions allow us to meet people and animals where they are—often in the most vulnerable moments of their lives—and offer care without conditions.

🟦 4. Animal Welfare Services

From grooming dogs in shelters to preparing animals for adoption to responding to emergencies in the field, we fill critical gaps in the city’s animal welfare system. We are proud to be the only nonprofit grooming salon in New Mexico, and to work alongside public agencies to give animals the attention and respect they deserve.

🟦 5. Policy & Advocacy

Our work in the field informs our voice at the table.
We advocate for policies that recognize the unique needs of low-income veterans, unhoused individuals, and at-risk animals. Whether it’s helping shape new partnerships, informing legislation, or demonstrating proof-of-concept for broader systems change, we are committed to building bridges between practice and policy.
