Meeting Animals Where They Live—Because They Matter Too

Not every animal in crisis ends up in a shelter. Many live in parks, makeshift tents, alleyways, or temporary roadside encampments—right alongside the people who love them. At New Mexico Vets for Pets, we believe that the human-animal bond is sacred, and it doesn’t disappear when housing is lost or resources run out. That’s why our field services team goes out—often into difficult conditions—to care for animals that would otherwise be forgotten.


What We Do

Through direct collaboration with Albuquerque Community Safety (ACS) and Roadrunner Food Bank, our field team:

  • Delivers pet food, clean water, and emergency nutrition support

  • Provides on-the-spot triage, basic hygiene care, and health monitoring

  • Offers grooming services, flea/tick support, and stress relief for animals living rough

  • Responds during ACS pop-up events, special deployments, and ongoing encampment monitoring

These efforts aren’t sporadic. We show up consistently, develop trust, and return regularly to the same places—because relationship-building is at the heart of real outreach.

We are currently the only nonprofit partner providing companion animal food and care across both ACS and Roadrunner’s field missions.


Why It Matters

For people experiencing chronic housing or food insecurity, pets are more than animals—they are family, protection, and daily purpose. When those pets are fed, clean, and cared for:

  • Human mental health improves

  • Public health risks are reduced

  • Emergency shelter surrenders can be prevented

  • The broader social service mission becomes more effective

And perhaps most importantly: it tells the people we serve, “You are seen. You are not alone.”

Everything we deliver—every bag of food, every leash or collar, every flea treatment or field shampoo—is made possible by donor support.

Our work in the field is resource-intensive. We’re on the road weekly. We purchase supplies in bulk, replenish often, and absorb costs so that no one in crisis has to choose between their pet’s needs and their own.
